“Nathaniel Marston, an actor on One Life to Live, has died after being involved in a devastating car accident last month, his mother posted on Facebook Wednesday. He was 40…The crash occurred outside of Reno, Nevada, on Oct. 30 and left the soap star with back injuries and his neck broken in several places, along with “other internal injuries” including a collapsed lung.”
Earlier reports attributed the crash to Marston possibly having fallen asleep at the wheel.

“A preliminary investigation has lead police to believe that Marston was fatigued and fell asleep while driving," according to a statement sent to ET on Tuesday, emphasizing that local Nevada highway patrol and tribal say no drugs or alcohol were involved in the single-car accident…The vehicle drifted into the opposite lane and it is believed that when Marston awoke he over-corrected, causing his pickup truck to flip several times," the statement continues.”
The Statistics on Drowsy Driving
According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration an estimated 72,000 crashes were linked to drowsy driving in 2013. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines drowsy driving as “the dangerous combination of driving and sleepiness or fatigue.” Being sleepy while driving is a high-risk issue because the exact moment sleep will come over one’s body cannot be predicted. When a driver is drowsy while behind the wheel, they:
- Have a decreased ability to pay attention to the road
- Have a slower reaction time for braking and steering suddenly
- Are impaired when it comes to making sound decisions
Houston personal injury lawyer Amy Witherite of the Eberstein Witherite LLP law firm, says that throughout her professional career, fatigued driving is one of the most reported causes of many of the car accidents involved in the cases she has taken on. Says the Houston attorney “of the numerous cases I’ve handled involving drowsy driving, many have involved commercial truck drivers, individuals who work long shifts, and drivers who failed to get sufficient rest before traveling long distances.”
The lawyer recommends that drivers pay close attention to the signs that they are drowsy and may be at risk of falling asleep at the wheel. These include:
- Frequent blinking or yawning
- Missing an exit
- Trouble remembering the distance that was recently driven
- Drifting in and out of their lane
Says Witherite, “it is extremely dangerous for drivers to be dismissive of any sign that they are tired to the extent that they could fall asleep while driving. Fatigued driving can warrant the same consequences as driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drivers should never put themselves or others at risk by driving drowsy.”
