You Know? April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

// 1-800 Car Wreck

The month of April has been designated Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and many transportation safety advocates are taking the opportunity to make more drivers cognizant of the risks involved in giving in to temptations that take their focus off the road. According to Houston car wreck attorney Amy Witherite, distracted driving crashes have increased amid an elevated use of mobile devices and GPS navigational tools among drivers nationwide throughout the years. In a recent blog that discusses the issue titled “Three Houston Teens Killed in Spring Break Crash Near Corpus Christi,” the lawyer states of the matter “it seems that with the high rate of the use of mobile devices, the number of drivers who become involved in accidents as a result of these types of distractions keeps growing.”

Reducing Injuries and Deaths Linked to Distracted Driving

According to statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1,060 people are injured in crashes daily where distraction is the reported cause. As noted in a Washington Post report, this amounts to 44 deaths per hour.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found a new way to get people’s attention to what it calls the growing problem of distracted driving: it says that every day nine people die and 1,060 people are hurt in crashes where distraction is reported as a cause.”

The number is not inclusive of all possible distracted driving related crashes, only those that police investigations have linked to the issue were counted. Says Houston Attorney Amy Witherite, “this means the number of distracted driving accidents that actually occur daily may be dramatically higher than what has been included in reported crash investigation results.”

The CDC says the range of activities that may be categorized as distracted driving is far reaching. The agency cited in a past report, “Distracted driving activities include things like using a cell phone, texting, and eating. Using in-vehicle technologies (such as navigation systems) can also be sources of distraction. While any of these distractions can endanger the driver and others, texting while driving is especially dangerous because it combines all three types of distraction.”

Houston lawyer Amy Witherite recommends that drivers make more of an effort to avoid common driving distractions such as:

  • Using mobile devices while in operation of a vehicle for any reason
  • Attempting to program navigational systems while driving
  • Checking social media while driving

Individuals who have been injured in a traffic accident caused by the negligent actions of a distracted driver can pursue legal compensation for related damages in accordance with personal injury law. Medical expenses, emotional suffering, and physical pain and suffering are examples of the types of compensatory damages victims in these accidents cases may be eligible to pursue.
